About

Toronto Artist, Valda Oestreicher, Ontario, Canada

In the past, my work focused mainly on natural environments and the vivid textures found therein. I found the inherent graphic quality of a woodcut print as being an expressive medium for the abstract patterns presented in nature. After moving to the city, I turned to still life and my love of drawing lead me to explore pastel. But in the last 10 years I have also enjoyed the greater flexibility and bold expression of oil painting.

The still life compositions are based on oranges, lemons and limes, and more recently pomegranates, vessels of all shapes, and exotic fabric backgrounds. These fruit have a vibrancy and freshness that stems from their shape, texture and colour. The selected plates and bowls are rich in character when interrelated with the fruit.

In my painting, I strive to evoke a mood that integrates manufactured objects, background fabric and fruit. Realistic rendering is not my objective, but merely a starting point.

My work is a visual, sensorial response to the world. The starting point has been the natural imagery of forests and lakes, fruit, earthenware and fabrics.
